Halyna Sevruk

monumental artist, ceramicist · 1929–2022

According to art critics, her figure is unique to Ukrainian culture, and her monumental works fascinate at first sight. Halyna Sevruk was an unsurpassed master of polyvyan ceramics, depicting the ancient history of Ukraine and its mythology, and forming the national spirit.

A great influence on her was the Kyiv Club of Creative Youth, where she befriended other nonconformist “sixtiers” and took part in evenings honouring repressed writers, actors and artists. For this she was harassed and persecuted by the KGB — for 20 years her works were refused by exhibitions and museums, and some of her monumental pieces were destroyed.
