Italian artist. Artemisia studied painting in her father’s studio, and her first known work – “Susanna and the Elders” – was at the time considered the work of her father. In 1612, she was raped by the Florentine painter Agostino Tassi, who worked with her father. After a seven-month trial, humiliating and painful for Artemia, Tassi was found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison. The artist’s experiences were expressed in her most famous work “Judith beheading Holofernes” (1612-1613). She returned to this plot several times.
