Hanna Sobachko-Shostak
folk decorative artist · 1883–1965
Master of decorative painting, originally from the village of Skoptsi (now Veselinivka, Kyiv region), a well-known centre of folk art. In 1910 a teaching and demonstration carpet workshop opened there, and the young Hanna was drawn in.
She grew up in folk culture, but her work was shaped by new approaches to ornament while staying closely connected to Poltava carpets and embroideries. Her life in art lasted more than half a century, and her works were shown at more than 40 exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad, beginning in 1913.
