Olga Rapai-Markish

(1929–2012)
One of the most famous figures in the realm of Ukrainian ceramics. The daughter of the poet and playwright Perets Markish, who was shot in the case of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, and the philologist Zinaida Joffe, who was repressed as a “family member of a traitor to the Motherland.” In 1953, she was arrested as a daughter of enemies of the people and exiled to Siberia, and then to Northern Kazakhstan. She was released in 1955. She returned to her studies and in 1956 received a diploma in the specialty of sculptor. Worked in the field of decorative plastic and since the end of the 1960s, mainly monumental decorative sculpture (fantastic animals and birds), architectural ceramics (panels, reliefs, anthropomorphic vases).
